Alkynes are not found free in nature but it can be prepared in labs.

One of the most famous sources of acetylene (ethyne) was discovered by a Canadian chemist: Thomas "carbide" Wilson. When calcium carbide is reacted with water, acetylene is produced.

The reaction is as follows:

CaC2 + 2H2O --> Ca(OH)2 + C2H2 (g)
(C2H2 = acetylene)
