Alkynes are hydrocarbons that have at least one triple covalent bond between two adjacent carbons. The general Formula for an Alkyne is:

CnH2n-2

Alkynes are one of three Aliphatic hydrocarbons groups. The other two are Alkanes (all single bonds) and Alkenes (at least one double bond). Alkynes are also referred to as unsaturated hydrocarbons as they contain multiple bonds (unlike alkanes).
