Two compounds are considered isomers if they have the same molecular formula (i.e. the same numbers and types of atoms) but different structures.

Examples:

1-butyne and 2-butyne (they both have the formula C4H6)
1-butyne 2-butyne
HCCCH2CH3 CH3CCCH3

2-heptyne and 2-methyl-3-hexyne (formula C7H12)
2-heptyne

2-methyl-3-hexyne
